Textpattern CMS forum

Hi, as the first phase of a rebranding/refresh of all our sites we've just updated our forum to FluxBB 1.5.5 along with building a responsive forum theme for it.

https://forum.textpattern.com

It's running a completely unmodded version of FluxBB apart from that we patch in Textile instead of BBCode. Any other enhancements are done with some discrete JavaScript and CSS.

Let me know what you think.

(For some reason this forum isn't letting me post links)

Re: Textpattern CMS forum

Hey Phil,

wow, that looks really awesome!
I hope the upgrade process was smooth? And what are you doing to fight forum spam?

P.S.: I promoted your account, you can now post links. That was an anti-spam measure on our side.

Re: Textpattern CMS forum

Hi Franz,

It was a fairly smooth process, although the old forum was on v1.2.8 so it was pretty old - took a while for the database to update.

We are using a couple of methods to stop spam, including using the StopForumSpam service - I won't go into details here but the whole build of our forum is available on GitHub if you want to dissect the code (along with our custom theming).

One prerequisite we had was that we couldn't use any plugins (mods) because they patch the original source code and would make future updates difficult. Looking forward to seeing a proper extension/plugin system in FluxBB in the future!

There are also a couple of HTML5 validation errors in FluxBB 1.5.x that'd be quite simple to fix - I can let you know the issues if you want?

Overall we were pretty pleased with the final result though, was not too difficult to get the forum mobile responsive in the end.

Phil

Re: Textpattern CMS forum

Awesome to hear that you had some fun! Or at least not many problems. wink

Also, after a quick look at your repo: interesting integration. Nice to see you have some Composer stuff in there, too.

Sure, would be cool if you could add a ticket to our bug tracker.

Re: Textpattern CMS forum

We've patched our FluxBB forum with some extra performance and UX improvements now (and updated to v1.5.6) - really snappy now, full changelog and code available here.

Re: Textpattern CMS forum

You might want to add this patch to your theme: https://github.com/fluxbb/fluxbb/commit … 69c794e5c4. Your theme displays a black border here, caused by this issue.

Re: Textpattern CMS forum

What exactly did you change to achieve better performance? The changelog is sooo long wink

Re: Textpattern CMS forum

We are still running FluxBB with great success - recently migrated to PHP 7.4 and MySQL 8 with a few patches/fixes provided by Visman (many thanks). We also swapped out the (IMO obsolete) messaging profile section in favour of a social media channel section instead.
