FluxBB 2: The new Dashboard interface

Hello everyone,

It's time! Yes yes! Indeed, today is the day we will show you the first pixels of the brand new FluxBB 2 Dashboard! I will not do that with screenshots. No, I've got something better for you, a website.

To become serious: the design and development of the FluxBB 2 Dashboard interface has hit a stage where we want your feedback. So, take a look and tell us what you think about it. To say some things about the interface: it's based on Bootstrap 2.3.1. On this preview website, only the 'dashboard'-area works. I also want to say that everything that's on it now is just placeholder stuff. This is not what the upcomming FluxBB 2 dashboard will look like (content-wise). Only the menu is for real now.

The dashboard is ment to work in Internet Explorer 8, but will work better in Internet Explorer 9, 10 and 11. For Firefox users, version 16 and higher should work. For Chrome you are going to need version 26. Opera will do it as of 12.00 and 15.0. And Safari should work as of version 5.1.

Well, post as many feedback as you want. smile

Ok also

.navbar-inner {
  min-height: 50px;
  padding-right: 20px;
  padding-left: 20px;
  background-color: #000;
}

and

.navbar .nav > li > a:focus,
.navbar .nav > li > a:hover {
  color: #ffffff;
  text-decoration: none;
  background-color: #b50000;
}

.navbar .nav > .active > a,
.navbar .nav > .active > a:hover,
.navbar .nav > .active > a:focus {
  color: #ffffff;
  text-decoration: none;
  background-color: #b50000;
}

and

.nav-tabs > .active > a,
.nav-tabs > .active > a:hover,
.nav-tabs > .active > a:focus {
  color: #555555;
  cursor: default;
  border-radius: 0.25em 0.25em 0 0;
  background-color: #ffffff;
  border: 1px solid #ddd;
  border-bottom-color: transparent;
}

and

.nav > li > a:hover,
.nav > li > a:focus {
  text-decoration: none;
  background-color: #f5f5f5;
  border-radius: 0.25em 0.25em 0 0;
}

and

.label-important,
.badge-important {
  background-color: #02c;
  border-radius:0.25em;
}
h1,
h2,
h3,
h4,
h5,
h6 {
  margin: 10px 0;
  font-family: "Segoe UI", sans-serif;
  font-weight: bold;
  line-height: 20px;
  color: #2365B0;
  text-rendering: optimizelegibility;
  font-weight: 100;
}

It's too flat, you have to give a little life here.

Re: FluxBB 2: The new Dashboard interface

I like the flat style. wink
Just looked to the code of the page.

<script src="http://html5shim.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/html5.js"></script>

Would'nt it be better to have this js file in the forum folder? That would save bandwidth...
Anyway, you don't use any html5 element in the page I saw, why do you need to call it then?
====================
I'm not sure the table layout is the best one to use here. Why don't you use <dl> tags? Sorry, I alwas try to avoid tables for 3 reasons:

  • I learned it is bad to use them for display reasons

  • They are slower to display

  • When you display them in little resolutions (for mobiles) there are always problems (a way to handle this: table-layout property...)

====================

<div class="navbar navbar-fixed-top">
<div class="navbar-inner">
<div class="container">

So many divs for just the nav! I know that the aim of these divs is to handle the most browsers cases but is this so necessary? I would really appreciate to have a more readable code, using more semantic elements and less divs and spans...

Re: FluxBB 2: The new Dashboard interface

@123 - I wonder: why the red/black navbar?

@Jojaba - First of all, it just a demo page and since that doesn't need HTML5 ellements, it doesn't use them, however, it's always nice to keep it future-proof. For the tables: like I said, it's just placeholder content and not the final stuff. However, it's not a crime to use tables, especialy not for what I used them here.

For the menu HTML: well, yes, in this case, it is. We are using Bootstrap here and this is a common way to do this for Bootstrap. There aren't that many other ways to do it the way it's done now, anyway.

I don't like this color pallet at all, it goes against all principes of use of colors. Looks like a bad copy of Google to me, what happend with the update-message anyway? There is a reason I chose the current colors, because these are used by FluxBB for the past 5 years now (and we are only 5 years old). Because it's Bootstrap, you can simply replace the CSS files with another Bootstrap template if you want.

Re: FluxBB 2: The new Dashboard interface

flat? smile
fluxdashboard.jpg

Updates: whaoooo, software and extension update will really be as simple as piwigo (for example)? If so, its' great!

I don't like fixed menu bar... But it's a personal opinion. If so, I think that something to indicate that page is partially hidden can be great (like the shadow in the new laravel.com site for example).

In 1.5 admin panel, one simple mouse movement and one click allow accessing p.e. forums settings. With this version, if I suppose that forums customisation (or user group) is in the Settings (or User) menu, one need two clicks and a more complex movement. Is a flat vertical list of admin function link planned? It can be needed too, at least on the main tab (dashboard). Or will sub-menu parts be accessed through tabs? (in this case, it's OK).

It's difficult to give opinion, as I don't see how will be organised the main forum menu (home / members / rules / search / ...) and the admin sub-menu. Via main bar menu ? via tabs? mixed of tabs, bar, links?

And what about site integration? How will such a bar (and especially if it is fixed) be simply integrated, for example in fluxbb site (http://fluxbb.org/forums/index.php)? Even if the forum must be used alone, integration capacity should be carefully studied (I did not say it's not smile But that another example, of integration in fluxBB site for example could be given too, especially for the menu)

Re: FluxBB 2: The new Dashboard interface

In 2.0, the admin panel will probably be an entirely separate section from the main forum. That doesn't mean it won't be integratable, though.

If I understood you... NO! The update notice should be always displayed on the index (or at least a user could close it manually)

Like I already said: for now, everthing is place filler, except the menus. As you can see, under 'User' (on the right side of the menu), there is a support-link. We will probably use the wiki on this site as documentation (not build-in) and the forums for support. But that's my vision. wink

OK, it makes senses: forum can be integrated in frontend site, and admin panel can be integrated in backend, if any.

Plus, we also don't need to make the admin panel themable like the frontend. smile

Why Twitter Boostrap ?
Why not another lightweight responsive framework ? Light as FluxBB

Like Franz, I've think that blue is better for Fluxbb. smile

With version 3, Bootstrap has become a prety light framework, however, for now, we will use version 2.3.2 because that's the stable version, as soon as 3 is out, we will jump to that (when stable).
