Updates from FluxBB world

It's time for an update on what's been happening around here lately.

Well, what is probably very important to most of you is that we are making good progress on the development of v2.0. During the last weeks, a lot of advancement could be seen in the new extensible, object-oriented database layer. We will soon "release" a first alpha version of FluxBB 2.0, called alpha1. Note, however, that this will just be a development milestone, not equipped with any new features or anything visible immediately. All changes so far were focused on simplifying development in the future. This will also be the case in the upcoming milestone alpha2, where we will restructure almost the entire code.

We are also happy to announce that we have a new team member on board: Dariusz - probably better known as daris to most of you due to his countless contributions of great modifications, e.g. his automatic mod installation tool "FluxBB Patcher" - has been diligently hacking away at FluxBB's code. His main work so far has been on the official converter tool for FluxBB. A first (beta) version is around the corner! Also, Dariusz has been playing around with an implementation of a true topic-tracking system.

For those of you roaming the wondrous world that is Google+: follow us on our official page - a place where some periodic development updates and, of course, release announcements will find you (instead of the other way around).

Re: Updates from FluxBB world

Quick question from a rookie developer, why are you guys changing the database structure/layer what are the benefits from doing so from the current one ?, why not look into different direction like making styles changeable inside admin page and no need to upload files from ftp just go to admin.php where theres a section you can upload mods etc..

Well, 2.0 will have many new features, for example a true one-click extension system (no core modifications anymore). We need this new (properly extensible) database layer for those purposes. It also uses proper inheritance, while the old one was object-oriented, but didn't really use the benefits that come along with that.

Haha, that made me laugh. I wish writing these announcements wasn't such a hassle for me wink

Re: Updates from FluxBB world

Great working folks, thks…

One thing, from a developer point of view : as far as i can see the code, it seems that the new database layer implies several lines for a single query (in order to affect each member of your array).
Is there a function for converting an old "$db->query" to the new format ?

Re: Updates from FluxBB world

@Mpok: I haven't written one, no. I will finish the documentation soon, though.
Or were you talking about a way to send a direct query to the database, without creating an object first?

Hello,
I meant : having a way (if it's possible) to convert our "$db->query(…)" lines to the new dblayer form.
Automatically, with a script.
That's will facilitate upgrade of mods.

Re: Updates from FluxBB world

Not really planning to, no - maybe somebody else will.

Really, it's not that complex and - to be honest - changes to mods will have to be quite big anyway. Not the best news, I know, but it's the truth, and impossible to avoid this one time. hmm
