Database size?

How big is a database like this with around 16,000 posts?
Is it a few megs or bigger?

Only have like 20 MB of MySQL storage at my current host...I know I won't hit the roof for a few years! big_smile but would be nice to know!

Re: Database size?

That does totally depends on your posts...

In a fun forum there could be 16.000 posts of with an average of 3 words, while a literature board could have 16.000 posts with an average of 1000 words.

But I'd guess that you definitely hit the 20MB with 16.000 posts...

Change your host, is my suggestion wink

Re: Database size?

The database on this board is currently 14.48 MB.

The only thing worse than finding a bug is knowing I created it in the first place.

In real world, that's not true except for very narrow, very specific board usage.

A while back on PunBB people posted their forum size and DB size. It was (iirc) 1KB per post on average, on very different boards and very different size.

Besides, search takes the most of it. Using 1.3 (when it's ready, like in 2010 or something) with the Fulltext extension should reduce the database size significantly.

Re: Database size?

Jérémie: I don't know about significantly. The fulltext index takes up space as well (albeit probably less than the search tables).

Re: Database size?

Add to that some shared host (because he talks about DB size limit) doesn't count index, or not all of them.

Hm, not very clear. They talk about "recommended size". But at 90% of this size, I received a mail "Please note that the size of your database reaches 90% of the recommended size. We ask you to take appropriate measures required to not exceed this size [...] if your base exceeds the recommended size, we will have to suspend". This "recommended size" is only a politically correct expression. I think that index will be included too...

For ftornell : with about 20000 posts, my fluxbb base size is 22Mb.

Re: Database size?

I'm hosted on OVH (France) on a shared host, and I had approximatly the same message about 2 years ago as my forum DB was near the limit (40MB). So I've changed the search mode for FULLTEXT, and the DB size dropped to 20MB.

So this shared host doesn't include the index in the DB size.

My forum has now 80000 posts, and the DB size is about 50MB. Without FULLTEXT, it's size would be over 100MB.

I still use punBB and waiting for Flux 1.3 to change.

Yup it was mainly them I had in my mind on that topic.

It was worth mentioning for some. It may be only one (plus a few small ones here and there), but it's a very good cheap host, biggest in France and growing fast in Western Europe; so it might interest a few people hosting personal websites.

Yippee! What a good news! I was afraid to exceed my 25MB limit trying to changed for FULLTEXT, or, at least, not taking any advantage.
I asked the question (here: http://fluxbb.org/forums/topic/536/mysq … -indexing/) but the answers was rather pessimistics.

I still use punBB and waiting for Flux 1.3 to change.

Why not using FluxBB 1.2.20?
