Thank you, sir. I suppose the file will be up for a while? wink

Anyway, I made a backup, just in case.

Mostly, I fergot to delete it again, so yes, it will. And if it's away you always can ask me for uploading it again.

What about using emojis? We don't need to ship images for emoticons, which makes pages load faster, and they are perfectly resizeable and stay crisp and clean.

Franz 2015-01-18 18:34:25

How do they work?

Studio384 2015-01-18 18:52:05

Just replace the images with the correct unicode in parser.php. Then, these emojis should get a nice class, so the parser would output something like this:

<span class="emoji">&#x263a;</span>

That's the code for a default smile. Styles should get this css:

.emoji {
	font-family: "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Apple Color Emoji", "Android Emoji", "NotoColorEmoji", "EmojiSymbols" !important;
}

This supports Windows, Windows Phone, iOS, Android, Firefox and BlackBerry if I'm not mistaking.

The result are nicely colored emojis (that fit the OS they are viewed on). All emoticons we have now are available as emojis:

Or a full list of all emojis:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoji

In fact, we can add more new ones - if we want, but I think that the current amount we have is good enough - without the need to include additional files. No sprites for emoticons, no images, just some code does the job.

  • Milestone changed from 2.0-beta1 to 1.6.

I think this can go into 1.6 too.

An additional reason to include this: as screens get higher and higher DPIs, the current emoticons become worse and worse to look at.
