Ticket #60 (fixed bug)

Upgrading to utf8_general_ci can cause "identical" usernames

  • Created: 2010-06-26 14:38:23
  • Reported by: Reines
  • Assigned to: Reines
  • Milestone: 1.4.2
  • Component: upgrading
  • Priority: highest

In utf8_general_ci:

  • Ä = A

  • Ö = O

  • Ü = U

In other words, in FluxBB 1.4 these are treated as equal, and hence the username "toma" is considered equal to the username "töma".

This isn't a problem in a fresh install as the registration script also treats these are equal and hence will disallow the second one. However in FluxBB 1.2 these aren't considered equal. If upgrading from FluxBB 1.2 to 1.4 it is then possible to have multiple users with usernames that MySQL considers equal. This causes the update script to die because of the unique constraint on the field. Beyond that, users will have problems logging in as the login script expects only 1 row to be returned at most.

Changing the username field to utf8_bin solves this, however I'm not sure if there are any side effects of this?

Okay I think I have a patch which handles this, could someone please give it a look over for me, and some testing?

  • Status changed from open to fixed.

I have now commit a fix for this.
