Ticket #245 (fixed enhancement)

organizing admin area

  • Created: 2011-01-14 23:58:26
  • Reported by: taylorchu
  • Assigned to: Reines
  • Milestone: 1.4.5
  • Component: usability
  • Priority: low

The admin panel could be organized in a nicer way. We should split the admin and moderator pages in the menu to make it obvious which moderators can have access to.

Admin options page also holds a large amount of options which might make more sense on other pages.

For example, maintenance mode in the maintenance page. Reports in the reports page. Censoring/ranks toggle in the censoring/ranks pages.

Additionally it might be worth merging the prune stuff into the maintenance page, since pruning is a form of maintenance.

  • Component set to usability.
  • Milestone set to 2.0-beta1.

Agreed. Both the admin panel and user profile could do with a good re-organizing for 2.0. It might also be sensible to make it more obvious which parts of the admin panel are admin only and which are accessible to moderators (even if it's a simple as having the menu on the left split into 2 sections, moderation and administration).

@Reines
like this?

Index

[Admin menu]
Categories
Forums
User groups
Options
Permissions
Prune
Maintenance

[Moderator menu]
Users
Censoring
Bans
Ranks
Reports

(I just sort them out.)
It's good idea because the list is long.

Yes, though as you were also saying maybe split the Options page up a bit so we'd have a few more menu entries there.

For example, we could combine the categories and forums, as well as probably prune and maintenance.

I think we should definitely think about submenus, maybe a little like 1.3 had it.

I have made a few changes related to this here.

taylorchu 2011-02-03 00:27:34

it's great to see this has been working on before 2.0. please work on admin_options.php as well. (move some of the options to other page as mentioned in the summary)

Reines 2011-02-07 18:27:43

I've created a patch for this, but I'm not sure I like it.

I would like to basically rip out the admin options page and have for example an email tab and so on, but that is a rather major change for the 1.4 branch.

I think I might leave this where it is, with simply the menu reorganized slightly, and create a new ticket to reorganize the admin options page in 2.0.

  • Status changed from open to fixed.

Not crazy about the fact that the admin panel was split into a Moderator menu and Admin menu. Why does the administrator need to be reminded of what moderators can access every time he goes to the admin panel?

Reines 2011-05-06 08:08:45

They don't necessarily have to be, but having it split up seems to make more sense than having it all jumbled together - and the only argument I can see for the old layout is familiarly.

Koos 2011-05-13 10:33:35

Having all the admin menu items in one admin menu makes more sense for me. 12 menu items are not that much, and I think it's more simplistic showing everything in just one admin menu for the administrator than two separate menus. An admin is an admin and not a moderator, so why show a moderator menu?

Franz 2011-05-13 10:59:42

One could also say that it is a logical grouping, since the first items are moderation task. I like it, but I suggest you make a forum topic so more people from the community can give feedback than here.
