Ticket #229 (wontfix enhancement)
Adding links in posts target="_blank" tags
- Created: 2010-12-28 07:36:32

- Milestone: 1.4.4
- Component: parser
- Priority: low
Hi I think it is good idea to put - target="_blank"
on all links in posts. Most of other forums CMSs use this.
This is simple and wont eat the simplicity of fluxbb

Personally I don't like this - If I want a link to open a new tab then I'll do it myself using middle click or ctrl+click or whatever.
As that article says - window management should be up to the user, not the website.

why not make this an option in the admin panel?

It's not to the administrator to chose, it's up to the user. So if you add this in the core, it would in each member profile for me, and unable by default.

I think that it is a matter of preference: some admins prefer target="_blank", some think it's not cool. I prefer target="_blank", but I think it should be left up to the admin.

Yes it's a matter of preference, but the user preference !
Beside like it says in the link posted by Reines : "forcing new windows to open is disrespectful and hostile to web site visitors. A number of usability studies have shown that experienced web users will find this behavior annoying and that beginners will get confused by it." I totally agree with this comment.

Take a look here
To come u with a good code we need - anyway - to rewrite everything to complain the XHTML 1.1 s..
I would avoid target for this already said accessibility gold rule: "If I want a link to open a new tab then I'll do it myself using middle click or ctrl+click or whatever".
Reines 2011-01-22 11:51:45
- Owner set to Reines.
- Priority changed from high to low.

If people cared about it that much, they could just change their browser preferences to not open links in new tabs.

<a href="URL" onclick="return !window.open(this.href)">Reference will open in new window</a>

it is "technically" valid. but not for the accessibility.
