confused CPU usage problem ....

enviorment:
Dedicated server, New machine.
Fluxbb1.2.22 (no modifaction)

there is just 3 - 5 people online, but CPU usage is high so got the server busy then un-accessble.
after change the forum to "maintenance" mode minutes,then turn the forum back to "online", the site get to normal, the cpu usage is not that high.

there is just tens of IP logs in "apache logs" today.

It suddenly changed to 38 users online now.. is it a DDOS attack? or something else?

Besides, everytime I load one page of my forum, my hard-disk make a sound, but as i load other website there is not always got this sound. It's making the same sound everytime I load one page of "fluxbb.org/forum"

What other software are you running?
Is this really a dedicated server or are you sharing it with someone?

And would somebody even bother to attack your forum?

@lie2815,
it's a Dedicated server with some websites,not many, so i can't think get all scripts running on it. I just turn off my forum,then the issue gone,so it concerned of me?
I don't know who wanna attack me and who will get profit from it. (no sense,maybe.it's non-profit site)

Uhm... doesn't a dedicated server mean that there's only one website running on it?

i think dedicated server means "not vps".
PS:
Do you know on the same server , just if 38 users viewing site B, then my site A (fluxbb forum ) displayed there "38 users online" , I don't think so/

all right . it's not a dedicated server.
but as i know the server is a new machine set, 8GB ram and with a CPU may not too low.

Well, a lot of people could be using that same machine.

And that means that they could be causing the CPU problem and that they could be the target of a DOS attack.

Not at all. A dedicated server means that you have an entire server all to yourself that isn't shared with anyone else. It may host 1 to x domains.

When you say 38 users online, is that members or guests?

If you look at the Apache logs, what files are they requesting?

its just a little while (some mins) , there were 38 onlines.,then it suddenly droped to " 5 online" by "admin_index.php" "server load" ( xx users online)

Apache logs: viewforum.php, viewtopic.php style/style.css just normal i think
