Re: A search box on the header

I suppose I would have to agree.  Whenever I visit a forum with a quick search I use it and never bother visiting the detailed search page.

Conversely though, it can be counter-productive. I've seen several occasions on boards with a quick search where even long-term members have complained about the search facility being a bit poor, due to the simple fact that they have always used the quick search and never realised that there was an advanced search option, unless there was specifically a link to it on the quick search panel.

Re: A search box on the header

Actually, what about replacing the quickjump menu (never heard of anyone using it...) with the quick search?

Bottom left is a pretty weird place for a quick search, it should be on the top right IMO.

Re: A search box on the header

Makes sense, I guess. Didn't know whether some of you thought it to be too prominent up there - but that's probably the point of it, after all.

Re: A search box on the header

Over time the location of certain features becomes standardised.  As Reines said, top right seems to be the standard location for a search box.  Where you have to be careful is if the site also has a search box which will almost certainly also be positioned top right.

Re: A search box on the header

I think the search at the top right would look just fine. Enabling and disabling it would be even greater given the user a choice.
