SliceHost
I'm persuading my boss to switch the website to Slicehost, we actually use PunBB on the site but I can use this forum to demonstrate to him how quick the server will be if we change.
So I was wondering what Slice (for instance, 256mb, 512mb) this site is hosted on?

Re: SliceHost
This is hosted on a 512mb slice. The only problems encountered seem to be related to Trac which appears to leak memory like a sieve.

Re: SliceHost
Oh we're planning on hosting it on a 256mb slice because the cost is the same as our current hosting.
I love Slicehost, also which Distro are you using?

Re: SliceHost
Alright, goodo.
I'm just thinking if a 256mb Slice will be enough, the site gets quite a bit more traffic than this site (I'm not sure about the stats, tbh, but it looks like the forums are more active) so I'm a bit concerned about performance.
I don't get paid from the site, btw, it dosen't make any money and the hosting is donated by the site founder, who currently uses Media Temple.
If I had money I would pay for a 512mb Slice for it myself, but I'm too young to be employed so yeah.

Re: SliceHost
Which MT service is he using? Because SliceHost is more akin to an unmanaged dedicated service than MT's GridService (which is what I find most people use).

Re: SliceHost
Not only unmanaged but no backups either. If you want simple backups that is going to cost $10 a month extra.

Re: SliceHost
It's bottlenecking MySQL connections though, Slicehost offers root access and Slicehost offers more control over the server.

Re: SliceHost
OK, but GridServer is shared hosting while SliceHost is an unmanaged dedicated server. That's a whole world of difference.
Managing an entire server, keeping all the software up-to-date and working, etc is not the same as just running your web application. If the person running the site is uncomfortable with that, switching to another shared host (ie: Dreamhost), going with a managed server provider, or just adding a MySQL GridContainer are all probably better options.

Re: SliceHost
Slichehost were taken over by Rackspace and Rackspace Cloud servers are essentially the same as Slicehost Servers with the difference that you pay by the hour. Trying the Rackspace Cloud could be a cheap and quick way of finding out if you are likely to like Slicehost.
