Spam at PunBB.org forums

In Firefox, I have all the forums I follow as bookmarks and use Open all in tabs a number of times a day, makes it real easy to see what's happening.

For the longest time, the PunBB.org forums have like 50% spam on a daily basis. Old threads dug up by some spammer to inject links via his/her comment or via their signatures. What troubles me is that these posts hang around for a while, like nobody is paying attention at certain times during the day. You would think that they would have moderators on a rotating basis to cover a 24 hour span, but it appears that's not the case.

Once I make the switch to FluxBB 1.4, I'll remove the link to PunBB from my bookmarks, it's getting a bit painful to visit them.

Re: Spam at PunBB.org forums

Remember it's not passion running that place it's business. They wont pay anyone to look after the forums out of hours and the people who work on them only probably care 9 - 5.

Maybe one day they will figure out that business model approach does not work AT ALL on open source model!

Agree completely. Im actually a moderator over at PunBB because I was getting annoyed with all the spam in sigs. I have made them make some changes as they was getting 180 users sign up daily for spamming links in their sigs. sad

I dont give a shit about PunBB 1.3.* but I will help out the PunBB 1.2.* users on the board.

I've alluded to this in the past, on this forum and over at the PunBB forums, obviously the Informer crew doesn't seem to really care.

Re: Spam at PunBB.org forums

I do hope that Rickard occasionaly kicks himself for selling to such an incompetent company.

If I created PunBB I would understand selling it to someone for money (we all would), but that dont mean I would not put a lot of effort to make sure the new owners have the same passion and understanding.  sad

Anyway that's all history.

FluxBB is the future! PunBB will be nothing in the long term! big_smile

People get involved with Open Source for various reasons, as an education, to make their resumes look better, or to do something with their time. Most communities are made up of really young people and older individuals. The young find girlfriends, or get bored with what they're doing, while the old scratch their heads wondering what happened.

Personally, I wanted to see PunBB succeed just for the thrill of it. Money never entered my mind, cause if money was my aim, I wouldn't be helping out projects, I'd be launching porn sites.

Re: Spam at PunBB.org forums

Here's an excellent example of what I mean:

punbb_spam_posts.jpg

7 news posts, only one is legit. It was almost midnight on the east coast of the United States.

They say that after 11:00 pm is the busiest time on the web, yet the lights are out at PunBB.org.

Hello. You are not quite friendly towards PunBB. We can't have a moderator with such a viewpoint:
"...PunBB will be nothing in the long term!...".

Hey, if they can't take constructive criticism, then it's their loss. Before the sale of PunBB, I was a moderator also, but I asked to be removed from my duties.

It proves my point about the Pun devs visiting these forums frequently too.

It's a shame they have the time to check out these forums but don't have the time to clear up their own.

Re: Spam at PunBB.org forums

Why so nasty about the Punbb devs in this thread? The criticisms voiced here make everyone seem small.

They are clearly active on site + doing Pun code etc.

No one knows what the rest of their workload is like, so give them a break.

Re: Spam at PunBB.org forums

I agree that this should not go any further. It is not our job to keep bashing at the PunBB devs. We may criticize them (as criticism is not always bad), but we shouldn't imply that they're incompetent. It's simply not necessary and could create a bad spirit between these projects, which I'd rather not see. Why can't we leave each other alone?

Still, sirena, I think, the main problem everybody has with the PunBB devs is their inactivity on the forums (it often takes a long time for a reply & tons of spam). Also, it seems like the goals they had with that project seemed to not be centered on the community as they should have. As it seems, their development is entirely centered on official extensions, and not the core code...

Re: Spam at PunBB.org forums

Can I close this. There doesn't seem to be anything else that can be said about the original topic. I split off two posts asking about spam blocking in FluxBB 1.4 into their own thread here http://fluxbb.org/forums/topic/3261/spa … fluxbb-14/

The only thing worse than finding a bug is knowing I created it in the first place.
