hello all smile

Are the developers of fluxBB working on a plugin to use facebook connect?

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

And what exactly would this do?

it will let you log in into fluxBB forum with out register, and showing your personal info from facebook.

Here is an example of Vbulletin using facebook connect:

http://forums.zynga.com/

These are the ideal features for the plugin:

Facebook users will be able to receive Facebook notifications when:

There is a reply to their thread or a thread that they're subscribing to
They receive a new PM (if module installed)
News-Feed will be published on to the user's wall when the user:
Logs in for the first time
Replies to a thread
Creates a new thread
Fetch user data from Facebook
Fetch data like name, location, profile picture and use it on your forums! (NOTE: Some data may not be available for some users)

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

Given the recent news about Facebook's plans to take over the web, such a mod would be useful.

Not surprisingly, they implement it over on:

http://forum.developers.facebook.com/register.php

so there must be some code out there that works for flux.

They may do, but either I'm blind or it doesn't work on either Chrome or Linux...

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

I think they have been doing some maintenance on their forum, given all the big changes recently. Certainly works now for me - on Opera.

I hate Facebook and dont have an account, so I won't personally be using it, but if it makes things easier for users and encourages 'stickiness' etc then it's worth considering...

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

Seems to work fine on Windows but not on Linux for some reason. Chrome is throwing javascript errors on both though, and I did find a markup typo.

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

In fact, maybe adding support for all OpenID/oauth things by default would be a better idea. vBulletin 4 randomly added Facebook support for no reason by default lately, and IPB 3.1, just look at the login area.

That doesn't really fit in with FluxBB's philosophy, I'd say...

I would agree. However I would say for 2.0 it would be nice if the authentication system was much more modular. In other words, you couple simply remove the regular authentication module and drop a facebook connect module or openid module in its place, or more likely just have them all installed and switch between them in the config file.

IPB 3.1 just has a login screen with a main forum login and buttons for Facebook/OpenID/Twitter alongside it.

I agree with Reines and Franz. This is not needed.

The problem there is that is basically just ramming in every possible feature (related to logins) possible, without thinking about what is actually needed. FluxBB is meant to be light and only include features which are fairly essential, saying IPB does this so we should do would basically be going directly against our philosophy.

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

Long time no see, FluxBB community. smile

I agree with Reines, the philosophy of FluxBB is to be lightweight. However there's nothing to be said against a modification, is it?

Some negative points of the Facebook Graph API are:
- need to register your website for the OAuth key
- need either JavaScript or IFrame to display the FB Connect screen

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

How much more heavyweight would this make FluxBB?

All I can see this doing is simplifying user registration.

It would simplify registration slightly for the subset of users of a given site with a Facebook account.
- Not everyone has a Facebook account
- Not everyone wants their Facebook account associated with their random forum identity
- Not every website owner wants people to associate their Facebook accounts with their identities on the message board
- Not everyone wants their website to have a dependency on a third party's web service.

I have absolutely no issue with this being made as a modification, but there's no reason it should be in the core either. A more general system for authentication, to make integrating a system like this easier? Yes. A very specific authentication system? No.

It's not about how much weight it adds to Fluxbb. If we only thought about that, we could add another bunch of things to Flux. Fluxbb should remain simple without unnecessary features.

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

Actually a Facebook bridge can have many more features than login/registration:
- say "thanks" for threads / posts using the "I like" button
- "I like" the whole forum (button in the footer or somewhere else)
- receiving Facebook updates for subscribed threads, private messages and more
- updating Facebook status: "I just posted a thread 'xy' on 'z board'"

Exactly. Which is why Facebook integration would make a wonderful modification but would be terrible as part of the core. smile

I misspoke. I was replying to Reines idea of a more modular login/registration system (that allows multiple third party web services).

Re: Facebook Connect plugin request

Barely, if at all. We would probably simply rewrite the existing authentication system into a class with an interface that would have to be implemented by every authentication class.
