Topic: 1.4 - Localized admin?

As some of you are probably aware, the 1.2 branch (and hence 1.4 branch) currently do not support admin panel localization.

There have been numerous discussions about including it into 1.4, but so far it hasn't made it.

The original argument against it was because 1.4 is meant to be a quick and easy upgrade from 1.2, and changing the whole admin panel would require extra work for end users, however like normal it has got a bit carried away and has had far more work done than originally planned, making updating using hdiff not really viable anyway. It can also be argued that mods would require extra work updating them to support the changed admin panel, but at most this will be a couple of strings moved into language files and worst case, the mod uses hard coded strings as before.

Since we have had quite a few requests to include this, we are opening this up for discussion. We are now leaning towards including this, especially since all the work has already been done, but would like to get the communities input before doing so.

PS. Yes I'm aware 1.4 is in feature freeze technically, but since this has been strongly requested it may be worth breaking the rules...

UPDATE: The response being almost entirely in favour, the admin panel now supports localization (as of FluxBB 1.4RC1 r.1362).

I absolutely hope the admin panel will be localized. If it isn't localized, administrators who don't speak in English won't be able to manage their FluxBB forums at all. However, if it is localized, administrators around the world could easily manage their FluxBB forums.

I don't think it would increase the size so much.

pointless since there only "admin or moderators were going use admin panel". and doing it make the stuff not that "stupid". if there is a vote,my choice is a "no"

I've never thought of it as a new feature, rather finishing off an incomplete existing feature.

For you an administrator or a moderator must read English whereas we can simply translate it ? English is maybe the language the most use in the world of softwares but it's not a reason to not think at the others.

And look at punreg.org ( http://stats.punres.org/ ) , English is less than 40 % of language usage (I know that all the board aren't there)
- English : 38%
- French : 33 %

it s my mistake, only Admin user using "admin panel".
there no need to translate for admin (backend of the website). it's not using too much comparing with frontend functions.

so there just 1 (most of the time) or 1+ Administrators on the board, only a few time to adjust the options of the board, so i just think it's pointless for a backend localized, (if one webmaster can't read English,then how she/he can set up this script ware done?)

another side, as my point I think it will make the backend system of this forum more complex  (or a little more) ; and i also feel this work (admin localized) will take time and developers energy.

since there is translate tools on web site like "translate.google.com", if someone don't know what the sentences or words means then she/he can query it quickly.

If the groundwork is already pretty much done, it'd be pretty silly not to incorporate it, IMHO. Especially when you consider all the effort that's gone into adding UTF-8 support and suchlike. To not have full language file support is like dangling a carrot. As Paul mentioned, it's more something which should always have been there rather than something which ought to be considered being added.

Don't forget the Administration interface for moderators where it can affect more than just 1 or 1+ Administrators.

It can be installed by someone/developer that reads English and be handed over to a webmaster/client to manage that doesn't need to read English if admin is localized.

People who want to translation Fluxbb have to know a little English. But not all users. Non-localized hinder ONE user, localization is worthy of consideration.

By the way, people from English-speaking area's opinions should be ignored.

Actually a lot of work was done by Jojaba who set up the whole thing on Google code along with some others who did translations.

Localized admin is essential, but not urgent imho.
Why not delivering the stable 1.4 version without localized admin to avoid further delays (at least for migration tests), then deliver this function in a 1.4.x or 1.5 version? (with some other evolutions if needed - but not necessary).
I think it's not a problem to have several versions before the distant future 2.0 version... And migration tests and end user work may be easier with several versions.

i'm not saying enlish, but i think English express the excact thing in admin_options. it make me confused if its been translated,(when A is A,it's enough, but I will need to know "iuerkl" is A)that is although a lot of fluxbb users don't speak english,they will know the excact meaning of every word in admin_options; after localized,they would not.

FluxBB is a multilingual forum software, so the admin panel should be absolutely also multilingual. We NEED to understand many people around the world still don't use English, and please do not ignore these non-English speakers.

If you developers want to let more people around the world using FluxBB, please make the admin panel be localized. Language issues are the huge gap to them.

If you can't read and understand your own language, a localised admin panel is the least of your problems.

Would there have to be a fallback to English just in case the langauge pack in use doesn't provide a translation of admin? If so, that would solve qie's problem as simply deleting or not uploading the language pack for admin would automatically put the acp into English.

Just added a fallback to the mod.  If the user language has no admin translation it falls back to the board default language and if that has no admin translation it falls back to English.  By editing a line in common_admin.php the admin language can be set manually.

The only thing worse than finding a bug is knowing I created it in the first place.
