i think it depends on what you want to make for an application.  i use shell scripts frequently for quick and dirty stuff.  you can also use php on the command line which is kind of fun.  do you want a gui for your app?  is it going to be cross platform?  you may want to check out python or java.

hey guys i've just installed a test of FluxBB 1.3 Beta.

imho, don't do xamp or god forbid wamp.  listen to elbekko.

i've been runing mysql and apache on fedora linux for a couple of years now and it's not that hard, has better security and you'll learn a ton.
