For you perhaps. I doubt that's true for most people. 1.4 is a compelling choice for people who liked 1.2 but who need more modern features (like UTF-8 support).

Of course, saying that the most important feature of forum software is SEF URLs is like saying that the most important feature of a search engine is a certain kind of pagination. The underlying system works exactly the same without the features: it's not the kind of thing that should be driving your choice. Instead, you should be looking at how well the software fits your needs for communication.
