the truth is we haven't been happy with 1.3 for quite a long time

I didn't realize that, so it does make more sense now. Thanks for keeping us updated.

This doesn't really make sense to me. Why can't you just bring the 1.3 branch to completion? Since 1.3 has taken too long, your solution is to discard it and start over again. Obviously that will take even longer. We kept being told that the only thing left in 1.3 was the CSS so why not just finish it already? Only then could you start the next major version.

I do really like the new approach to development, though. I hope this works out.

I wasn't too fond of McCain or Obama to be honest. I've never thought the idea of a new leader every four years was something to be taken lightly, regardless of if you like the winner or not. The plain fact is, this country could now get better or worse, and every four years a fear lingers inside of me that no matter who wins, America will now be undergoing quite a few changes that could hurt us or help us.

I'm pretty sure that, as long as we have a two-party system, the country is destined to get worse, always.

Sorry, I think we don't understand me (my English is very bad, I know).

My idea is release a RC version, not label "Final" a bugged version.
For example, before Firefox 3 final release, there are 1 RC version. Developers and users know the RC was bugged, but for tests it's sufficient.

An RC is released when there are only bugs left to fix, but there are some features to be added (like the new markup). So before an RC a beta (beta 3) is released. smile

That is not what a Release Candidate is. As the name implies, a Release Candidate is a put out as a finished product with the full intention that it will be the final release unless critical bugs are found.

This is certainly a decent idea and seems a lot better than stringing people along, with them thinking 1.3 is right around the corner.

My thought from the beginning is why not just go back to 1.3 beta 2, fix the bugs and anything that is critically broken, and release it? After all, that is the point of a beta. Then the current revision, with Paul's work incorporated, would be a later version to come after that (for example, 1.3 beta 2 released as 1.3, and current revision when finished released as 1.4). But I am not opposed to your idea of further developing the 1.2 branch as a intermediary version between 1.2 and 2.0.

I would like to see a new approach to development. It seems you need help, but yet, you don't want it, and have even stated in the recent past you do not want or need new developers. I think the project should be opened up more, by either a) letting anyone submit work, and having the official developers approve or rejected it, or b) designating a handful of "assistant developers", who are assigned only one or a few tickets at a time, whose work must be checked by the real developers. Also I think the refusal by a developer to use Trac is a very bad thing.

In hindsight, full page one rewrites always delay projects like this, and shouldn't have been attempted this close to 1.3's completion.

I am also disappointed that FluxBB is still not ready. I don't think the problem is that the development is too slow, or that there isn't enough work being done, or anything like that. I think the project bit off more than it could chew when it decided on making huge changes this late in the game. We've had two beta releases, and a beta release is supposed to be of a virtually finished product. So to decide to go back and completely rework elements of the project after it was in Beta 2, so close to being finished, was a big mistake. Large modifications could have been saved for 1.4.

Yes, FluxBB is a free project put together by volunteer effort, and the developers can do anything they want. But the longer it takes, the less useful it becomes. By developing it in the public eye, having this discussion forum, having a downloadable Beta, and saying that there isn't much work left, you are stringing along potential users--and what is the point of that if it's going to be an eternity before a real release? And tossing around the "it will be done when it's done so don't ask" line only alienates people.  If you keep going down this road, you will have no users, and all of the effort put into this will have been wasted.

I think the project needs a real leader to stand up, make decisions, and keep the project going...kind of like what Rickard was to the PunBB 1.2 branch.
