A forum is one of the most critical software decisions a community will make, because switching it out can be very difficult once the membership grows and the posts number in the 10's of thousands.

You're right, but what's exactly the problem? We have a very nice, very stable version out there and it's working fine...

I have 2 PunBB 1.2.21 forums going but I'm not about to put up any more, and I'll tell you why.

At present PunBB is a spammers destination, thankfully an updated Akismet plugin is keeping the posts at bay but they sign up by the thousands, and with email verification, I spend my time deleting failed delivery responses from my mail boxes. Maybe you can instruct me and new forum admins as to how do we stop the spammers from filling up our user roles?

This is off-topic for the thread, but maybe this will help.

The following works well for registrations:

http://fluxbb.org/forums/post/21387/#p21387

On mine, I don't bother checking if they are guest and I use get_remote_address(), which seems to work better than $_SERVER['SERVER_ADDR']), but otherwise I've been very happy since adding this.

(note that they've added 127.0.0.1 to their spam list, which means you can test this script on a local server, but you need to disable it to create test registrations on your local server, which for me is occasionally an issue).

Re: The future of FluxBB

Just whilst on that subject, what type of catch rate does the stopforumspam site have? A small or decent percentage?

Decrease or increase? big_smile

English mistake smile I'm not happy to see the decline.

that was kinda funny, lol. but nice idea, but where will you find "Communicator" to have that much time.

"that much time" ? Same format of questions, the single job is to merge answers to do a about clear report. It even could be done without 'communicator', but directly by all devs' in a private page of a wiki, then a copy of the 'report' is put in the forum.
I agree with MattF:

Posts like this and the one earlier really do piss me off

And I agree with Smartys too:

Rather than dismissing the post as a rant, people should respond to the content of the posts and express their opinions on it

But as I said, i think that justified or not, these kind of reaction are often the consequence of a lack of communication. Of course the consequence of disappointed hopes too, but this last point could be reduced by regular information I think.

There are more than just the Akismet mod available for 1.2*.

For a preferable out of box experience, it should be included in the download file, where the admin can turn the feature on when his forum is discovered by the &^%$#*@ bots, and it should work, fingers crossed. It's a war out there damn it!

Re: The future of FluxBB

Actually i think you guys should stop with 1.4 and 2.0. I think you guys should make a own forum software (no punbb). That would be better. Yes, really.

Re: The future of FluxBB

That's what 2.0 will be, a whole new piece of software with the ideas of FluxBB and PunBB.

No, it needs lots of planning first. But now we're concentrating on 1.4 and personal things wink

Re: The future of FluxBB

Hi all! There is FluxBB v1.2.21 in download section, not FluxBB v1.4.
1.4 is good enough, isn't it? OR it'll looks like downgrade, even for you guys?
Be consistent, please!

1.4 isn't ready yet. And it isn't a downgrade. It's an upgraded version of 1.2.

Re: The future of FluxBB

1.4 isn't ready yet.

1.3 was not ready for a long time too. Until it have gone and lost.
Please declare 1.4 as "quite ready".

Re: The future of FluxBB

Well, ok, the beta is almost ready.

Re: The future of FluxBB

Hi, just wanted to tell you guys that I can't wait for 1.4 : I was not really excited by 1.3 which seemed to have lost some of the "fast, light and user friendly" philosophy, but at the same time I had to mod 1.2 (in a pretty dirty way I think) in order to use UTF-8. So 1.4 is just what I needed smile
Also, I expect the mods for 1.2/1.4 to be developped again once 1.4 is released, which is a good thing.

Cheers ! smile

Re: The future of FluxBB

Yeah well, 1.4 is taking way to long to be released once again.
