User Integration between existing platform and fluxBB

Hey all, So far I like what I see. Let me jump right in ....

I'd like one login to sign up and profile to follow the user throughout both an existing application and fluxBB. Seamless.

Is there an existing methodology (extension/mod/plugin -- whats the difference here?) that allows "generic" user table mapping?

If not -- i need to write one - but was thinking for the good of the community it might have to be customizable so that it could allow the forum to operate on a variety of CMS or other user based applications (not just word press, etc). Would the best way be to simply intercept and or piggy back the registration process of either fluxBB or my application? Is what I am asking "impossible" or more trouble then its worth?

Thanks as I intend to give fluxBB a go at this and would like to bounce ideas and progress off those interested.
